In 2021, 13,027 road accidents were recorded, registering an average 1000+ cases per month with over 39,000 individuals involved in these crashes. Data has shown that on average, road accidents tend to be quite fatal with a record of a death every two accidents.

These fatal accidents also seem to affect male adults more with them being more likely to be injured or killed in any accident; this is evident when you realise the data show three male casualties for every one female casualty.

The data also brings to light the fact that Nigerians enjoy speeding a little too much as Speed Violation was the most prevalent cause of crashes, responsible for 69% of accidents.

Observing from a regional perspective, the North Central motorists appeared to be the least careful drivers in the country by a large margin, with the FCT being the main driver of this statistic because over a quarter of recorded accidents in the region happened there.

Surprisingly Ogun state and not Lagos was the most dangerous place to drive in the SW. Even with the high possibility of being caught in an accident in Ogun state, motorists in the state were less likely to become casualties in the SW when compared with other regions.

On the good side, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Borno had the least accidents. (It is useful to note that the data from Borno could be influenced by the security crisis in the state).
